Star Wars Lightsaber Unleashed for iPhone

What is it?

One of the more popular and well known free applications in the iPhone store, Star Wars: Lightsaber Unleashed, previously known as iSaber, turns you into a true Jedi with your iPhone by putting lights and sounds in the palm of your hand that react as you wildly swing your arms around the piece of the galaxy that we call Earth.

How much does it cost?

Free.

Who is it good for?

Star Wars fans. Anyone who has lots of friends with iPhones because they might have it. People who enjoy general nerdy fun. Sci-fi lovers and the type of people who find enjoyment shopping at ThinkGeek.com.

Summary

It’s definitely not useful for anything productive, but the Star Wars: Lightsaber Unleashed application is a great source of galaxy battling, random fun that serves as an advertising platform for a $5.99 Star Wars game. While it’s pretty much just nifty noisemaker with some nice colors, the sound effects can actually make swinging your phone around a lot more fun that you’d think because the sounds are so undeniably Star Wars. It’s probably not the coolest thing to bust out at parties, but it’s something that’s fun to mess around with when you’re around your fellow galaxy-swashbuckling friends.

Keep it or Delete it?

Keep it.

This is one of those applications that many of us think that we’re too cool to download, but we download it anyways.

Then, we think we’re too cool to use it, but we use it anyways.

After that, we think that we’re never going to use it, but we find ourselves flicking the speaker on our phones just so that we can get the full Star Wars effect while we battle imaginary Boba Fett and nameless Stormtroopers while comfortably lying in bed.

While anyone can get the basics behind the application - choose a character, turn on your lightsaber, and swing away as the “wohm…wohm…” sounds match your movements. Swing hard and you’ll get a spirited crash or swing lightly and get the smooth hum of your lightsaber passing through the breeze.

One of the fun things about the app is the ability to create your own character and customizable lightsaber. We created a new character by the name of Snuggles McGee, who looks like the Boston Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster.

When creating a character, you’re not only able to upload a picture, but you can choose the color and base of their weapon as well. So you could potentially battle it out with friends using your own customized lightsabers. You, with your manly blue saber of death, and your sister, with her girlish pink silly warm flashlight of lightsaberness.

So yes, we admit that there is not a whole lot to the application. Normally, we like functional apps that serve a purpose.

For Star Wars: Lightsaber Unleashed, it’s a stretch, but we’ll have to say that the application cures nerd boredom and gives a Star Wars fanatic something to potentially role play with along with his buddies. And really, with the reach of Star Wars, it’s not just for superfans, but it’s for anyone who really enjoys the nostalgia of the franchise who has a little bit of imagination.

With the customizable options, which we admit are limited, the application adds just a little bit more to the experience in order to make users get into it that much more. The sound effects are fantastic, along with the ability to view your lightsaber’s wrath full screen.

While this app would have to be free for us to give it the “Keep it” label (which it is), you’ll find that the application is a pleasant random surprise that many of your friends already have so you can share in the fun together.
